A "thank you" to everyone.

I've finally send a message to Teamsugar concerning with having a more diverse coverage of celebrities on Popsugar, which she will then forward it to Pop and Molly.

I want this to be a collective effort so here is the message I send:

"Dear Pop and Molly,

First of I love Popsugar. The lovely atmosphere of the community was what attracted me to Popsugar in the beginning. As a member of the community for 17 weeks, I visit the site religiously.

However, this isn't a love letter on how wonderful the community is but more of a request. I have talked to many sugar members and they all agree that a diverse coverage on celebrities is needed in Popsugar.

You have to remember that sugar members are diverse too in ethnicity, background, culture, likes, dislikes, and heck maybe even in sexuality, but Popsugar doesn't reflect that or cater to the diversity of the sugar members. The excessive coverage of Britney, Lindsay, Hayden, Hilary, Mischa, Angelina, Jennifer Garner, Rachel Bilson, for examples, (or as I like to call them "the usual suspects" or "your typical white girl in Hollywood") are too much and unneseccary. Really do we need to see photos of Angelina taking her kids to school every day?

I know that these celebs are who you like to write about, but there are many sugar members that are just tired of reading about them. I also know that it's base on how many hits that the post gets, but in spite of the many hits that a Paris Hilton post gets the comments are negative. In other words, sugar members comment on how much they hate her or sick of her. Doesn't that mean something to you? Like I said you enjoy writing about them but it seems that you don't take to consideration on how many negative comments you get on them?

The argument that these are the celebs who are in the limelight all the time can be made. However if other celeb blog sites like JustJared, Dlisted, Oh No They Didn't, and Perez Hilton can find stories on some of the most private celebs out there I think you can too. In addition, these sites post on celebrities of all ages and race. I don't see how you can't do that as well.

The postings don't have to be on their daily activities; it can be about anything. As an example, Oh No They Didn't posted a story on the artist Bjork performing in the Opera house in Sydney. And that post got more than 40 comments by the readers.

When I looked at the source of you postings, I see so many celebrities that you could have written about instead you picked to write about the usual celebrities we see often on Popsugar. For examples today there were photos of Helen Mirren at the National Movies Award and Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" New York Premiere. There are many sugar members who are fans of Ang and Helen.

So with that said, as part of the ongoing effort to have more diverse postings of celebrities I want you to know that we, sugar members, love diversity.

Here are our efforts:
The Steve Martin post got more than 48,500 hits, which is close enough to the Paris Hilton's 50,000 hits. 71 comments were made as well in the Steve Martin post: http://popsugar.com/656181. Also I started a blog asking "Which other celebrities would you like to see in Sugar?" Many people commented as well: http://teamsugar.com/user/pinkflats/blog/660064. You can go to that blog to see a list of celebrities that sugar members would like to see more.

Here are just a few:
1. Gabrielle Union
2. Jennifer Connelly
3. Veteran actors, like Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton
4. Tracie Ellis Rose
5. More Latino celebrities, like Shakira and Gael Bernal Garcia.
6. Gerard Butler
7. Seth Rogen (my personal favorite)
8. Clive Owen
9. Celebrities from different parts of the world, from the UK to Asia
10. Just any celebrities who have talents to offer, not just attention-craving celebs.

I hope that you too would read the comments and see the message that is being made across: WE WANT DIVERSITY.

Like I said you have to remember that this is a community full of members with diverse taste in celebs, likes, ethnicity, culture, and background.

Please do consider our request. On behalf of many sugar members, thank you so much.

pink."

I really do hope that Pop and Molly do take this to consideration and broaden their choices of celebs to write about. If not, I can take comfort in knowing that I did my part and got many support from everyone.

Lastly I just want to thank everyone who commented and supported this idea.

Good letter Pink! I'm in agreement, As a big Helen Mirren fan (Judi Dench & other UK actors) & many Asian actors, more diversity is needed here. Bravo!

I had no idea this was going on, but good job for standing what you believe in and making an effort to change things. I too think that annoying fake celebrities like Paris Hilton and this Heidi fake boobs girl wouldn't be around if nobody talked about them. If we're gonna write about celebrities let's focus on real celebrities and the whole spectrum, not just a few!

thanks ciaobella.

Coincidentally, this morning I was thinking about searching for Tracy Chapman.

I want more socially conscious people, not necessarily celebrities.

Great letter. I don't visit the sugar sites so often because of the generic coverage and I do agree that there is a lack of diversity. I just logged in today after quite some time and have 24 messages in my inbox, but I'm actually looking forward to catching up on them now that I know you've been covering this subject. Thanks for your efforts to keep the site true to all of its visitors!

I understand your want for diversity but I have some problems. Im not attacking you but sharing my views.

Popsugar is a gossip site. They are going to post the gossip stories of people making news. These people are what you call "your typical white girl in Hollywood". Yes they can get boring but people like Gael Bernal Garcia are not making news. These types of celebs are private for a reason. There is no need to post a story for the diverse celeb sake.

Pop is also a friendly gossip site (completely unlike Perez Hilton). They dont go digging for super private celeb news. They post stories on people who put themselves out there also unlike Perez.

Now terms of a celeb working such as performing or movies, that is why we have a wonderful site like Buzzsugar. Bjork performing is not gossip which is why it is completely logical for Pop and Molly to not report it

Once again Im all for diversity. Personally Im more concerned for diversity in movies and tv...not on gossip sites

This is just my opinion

i understand your view jess ness, it's just that a gossip site can post about different celebs. i'm not asking to lessen the coverage on paris, lindsay and such but maybe at times pop and molly can post about other celebs in the industry. they post about celebs going to charity events and award shows, which isn't exactly gossip, but when they do they focus it on the same people.

Popsugar "reports" on concerts all the time, so posting on Bjork wouldn't be unusual.

I have commented many times about the movies and books and TV shows posted and reviewed on the Sugar Network that I wish there were more diversity in the choices. And I wish the writers of the posts would note the lack of diversity in many of the fall shows. If we make it known that its important to us, eventually those who make these shows will take heed. For every Grey's, Lost and Ugly Betty, there are many more shows that are completely Anglo and that take no notice that people of color exist.

As much as I love Sex & The City, that was a huge gripe I had with the series. NYC is not a bleached out city! The movie will have Jennifer Hudson, which could be promising. But I'll reserve judgment until I see it..

Bravo to anyone who seeks a better reflection of our world's diversity. It will help engender more understanding and acceptance.

Well put pink! Although i would really be sad without my daily dose of Britney's madness to make me feel a bit more sane in this world, ya know? I do agree that we need some more diverse additions to the mainly white-washed news that we get everyday. Thanks for going to all this trouble to get the word out to popsugar! :HUGS:

in addition, jessness, popsugar "report" on charity events, award events, concerts, fashion shows, which aren't exactly gossip. i guess to them gossip is some star from a cancelled tv show going to the grocery store everyday. if so, then helen mirren, bjork, tracie ellis rose, and such doing the same thing is worthy of being a gossip as well. and if gael bernal garcia isn't making news then i guess rachel bilson's grocery shopping is very, very newsworthy.

i'm not saying that pop and molly should search hard to put very private celebs out in the limelight we just want to see different celebs that's all. i'm sure everyone wants to know what is going on with their favorite celebs. i mean many celebs out there are doing movies, having premieres, press conferences, print interviews and such so there's a lot of substance they can write about.

like i wrote in the letter, in one of their sources there were photos for the national movie awards in London attended by the likes of emma watson and helen mirren and ang lee's "lust, caution" ny premiere. these "private celebs" ARE putting themselves out there and does seem logically to "report" about them if pop and molly "report" on them. i don't see how these award shows and premieres are different from all the other award shows and premieres popsugar "reports" on.

and i know that it is a friendly gossip site but i don't think that these other snarky celeb sites go digging for news when in reality some of their gossips come from the same sources that popsugar get their gossip from, it's just a matter of "reporting" them and how you "report" on them.

and like i said i'm not trying to eliminate lindsay, britney, paris and such from the site but it would be nice to see other celebs of different ethnicities because after all this is a community that has members from different places with different cultures, likes, lifestyle, and taste in clebrities.

How the heck was overkill on Paris left off the list? Paris, Nicole, Britney and Lindsey should be shelved for at least a couple months. Unless of course, they actually do something newsworthy or even gossip worthy.
